Home Territories: Long Island and into Southampton, New York

Language: Similar to Niantic, Montaukett, and Narragansett

Enemies: Pequot tribe

The Shinnecock Indians were known for their currency of wampompeag (wampum), which were well-crafted shell beads strung onto threads.

Wampum belts were often presented to seal important treaties between the Shinnecock and other Indian tribes, and for other important events, such as intermarriage between tribes.

Today, they are recognized by the State of New York.
