Shoshone-Bannock History in Idaho
PART I OF II: 2008's historic Idaho Democratic Convention, held in Boise, ID, June 12-14, invited Idaho Native American Tribal members from the Shoshone-Bannock/Fort Hall, Shoshone-Paiute/Duck Valley, Nez Perce, and Coeur D'Alene tribal communities to take an active part in the convention activities. On June 12th, the Idaho AFL-CIO hosted a Democratic picnic for convention goers. Mr. Ted Howard, Cultural Resource Director, Duck Valley, spoke to picnic participants about the Shoshone-Paiute-Bannock history in the Boise Valley area. 9:49 minutes.

Part II-Grand Entry, Flag Ceremony and Recessional
All convention tribal members participated in the grand entry at the beginning of the June 13th Idaho Democratic Convention gathering followed by a flag ceremony and presentation by Mr. Lee Juan Tyler, Council Member, Shoshone-Bannock/Fort Hall community. Fort Hall and Duck Valley singers and drummers played songs for the grand entry, flag ceremony and recessional.

BIA Higher Education/Hopi Supplemental Grant

These grants are awarded to eligible Hopi students pursuing an associate, baccalaureate, graduate, or post-graduate degree on the basis of financial need as recommended by the college/university's financial aid officer. Entering freshman must have a 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for high school coursework or a minimum score of 45% on the GED Exam. Continuing students must have a 2.0 CGPA for all college coursework. This grant is awarded as a secondary source of financial aid to eligible students. Deadlines are as follows: Fall Semester-July 31st, Spring Semester-November 30th, Summer Sessions-April 30th. Maximum awards are as follows:

BIA Higher Education Grant: $2500 per semester

Hopi Supplemental Grant: $1500 per semester

Hopi Scholarship

The Hopi Scholarship is awarded to eligible Hopi students on the basis of academic merit. Students must meet the following CGPA: Entering Freshman must be in the top 10% of their graduating class or score a minimum of 21 on the ACT or 930 on the SAT; Undergraduate must maintain a 3.0 CGPA; Graduate, Post-Graduate/Professional students must maintain a 3.2 CGPA for all coursework. The deadline for this scholarship is July 31st. This scholarship is not available for summer sessions and is only awarded in the Fall Semester. The maximum award for the Hopi Scholarship is $1000 per semester.

Private High School Scholarship

The private high school scholarship is awarded to encourage Hopi students who desire to achieve and maintain a high level of academic excellence at an accredited Private high school. Two awards are made annually by the Hopi Tribe. Students must meet the following criterion: Entering Freshman must have an eighth grade CGPA of 3.50. Continuing students must have a CGPA of 3.25. Deadline is July 31st.

Tuition/Book Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to Hopi students pursuing post-secondary education for reasons of personal growth, career enhancement, career change, and/or continuing education for part-time students. Deadlines are as follows: Fall semester-July31st, Spring semester-November 30th, Summer Sessions-April 30th.

Educational Enrichment Grant

Funds are available to Hopi students who have been accepted to participate in special activities and events that offer unique opportunities to develop leadership, personal skills, or to acquire educational/pre-college experiences. Examples of such activities and events include: Math Camps, Pre-College Orientation, Conferences, etc. This grant is open to Hopi students from fourth grade through college. Applications are accepted year round and must be submitted at least two weeks to the date of activity.

Standardized Test Fee Scholarship

This service is designed to provide financial assistance to Hopi individuals taking standardized tests for reasons, such as college entrance examinations or professional certification. This includes, but is not limited to, the ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, CPA Examinations, Bar Examination, etc. Applications are accepted year-round and must be submitted thirty days prior to the test date.

Tribal Priority Scholarship

This highly competitive scholarship is awarded to encourage Hopi college students to obtain baccalaureate and graduate degrees in areas of prioritized interest to the Hopi Tribe, and encourage these graduates to apply their degrees to Hopi Tribal Goals and Objectives. This scholarship is only available to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing a baccalaureate or graduate degree in one of the following areas: Law, Natural Resources, Education, Medicine/Health, Engineering, or Business. Deadline is July 31st of year offered.

Students applying to the Hopi Tribal Grants and Scholarships Program must be enrolled members of the Hopi Tribe.
