A variety of tribal folklore provides the episodic thrust of this Hallmark production. The framework of the move tells the story of a resentful Lakota teenager (Eddie Spears) who reluctantly agrees to drive his wise old grandfather (August Schellenberg) from their South Dakota "rez" to the All-Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Along the way, the tradition-bound elder serves as tribal "dreamkeeper" for his initially resistant grandson, who gradually realizes that his grandfather's stories are essential in preserving the fading cultures of the Lakota and the several other tribes whose folklore depends on unbroken generations of oral tradition.
There are many familiar faces in this film from the movie "Dances With Wolves". But Dreamkeepers is more than just an entertaining family movie. It's not about "myths" in the way that White people see myths. It's about how story is life.
A lot of the stories told by the Grandfather are becoming less and less told, and now are preserved for the younger generations in a way that still respects the 'oral tradition' that they come from.
This movie will make you cry one moment and laugh like crazy the next. It's a true gift for generations, keeping alive some of the best stories from the real Turtle Island and weaving all of it into a deep and compelling story that can move anyone who listens.
