The Comanche Nation College (CNC) in Lawton, Oklahoma was established as a community college by a Comanche Nation Charter Resolution in 2002. The Comanche Nation established a Comanche Nation College Council of leaders in higher education. CNC was the first Tribal College established in the state of Oklahoma.

Comanche Nation College has been licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Private Vocational Schools since 2004. In April 2008, the college received provisional accreditation for a practical nursing program from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. At the end of March 2011, the Oklahoma Board of Nursing approved the Comanche Nation College (CNC) Practical Nursing Program.

Comanche Nation College currently is in its fourth year of collaboration grants through Oklahoma’s Health Science Center for undergraduate development in STEM programs and research initiatives. Special summer institutes for qualified candidates provide full scholarships to students to conduct research in research universities.

The Board of Trustees for the North Central Association-Higher Learning Commission (NCA-HLC) of Chicago, IL voted on November 1, 2013 to grant Comanche Nation College (CNC) the status of “candidate for accreditation,” according to a letter from then NCA-HLC President Sylvia Manning.

With candidate for accreditation status, CNC is now approved to offer certificates and associate-level degrees.

CNC will be a candidate for accreditation distinction for four years. A biennial evaluation by NCA-HLC was held in 2014 to determine if the tribal college is making adequate progress toward full accreditation requirements. According to NCA-HLC guidelines, if an institution believes that it is making better than adequate progress within the candidacy time frame, a request for “Early Initial Accreditation” can be filed in place of the biennial evaluation.

The Statement of Affiliation Status and the Comanche Nation College Organizational Profile can be found on the NCA-HLC website, www.ncahlc.org. For more information on CNC and the upcoming spring semester, call (580) 591-0203.
