Oneta is a freelance artist from Booneville, Mississippi. Coming from a mixed cultural heritage, she utilizes a wide range of influences to produce beautiful works of art. From traditional depictions of animals and native peoples to innovative pieces featuring a strong Native American background, each work is uniquely her own.
Although she works in a variety of traditional mediums such as pastels, oils, pencil, and acrylics, Oneta has been drawing away from the usual artists support of paper and canvas. Much of her present work is now being rendered on leathers, feathers, and other natural materials. Because of a deep love and respect for life, most feathers are dropped feathers; leathers and furs are recycled.
Oneta has been painting on feathers for the last eight years. Each type of feather has to be dealt with differently, but no matter what type or size, each will have a multitude of paint layers. These layers are applied very carefully, letting each layer dry before the next is applied. Some layers are opaque, others transparent. It is this technique that gives the paintings their three-dimensional quality.
The feather is not mounted during the painting process, but is held loosely by the artist in her hand. With a deft hand, meticulous strokes and a slow weaving of layer upon layer, Oneta has created a distinct style - a unique creation that combines both modern and traditional elements. Her work has won numerous regional and national competitions and graces galleries and private collections the world over. She is now being hailed as the Most Versatile Wildlife Artist in America.
