Montana artist Karen Noles, who is also accomplished with watercolor, pastel and gouache, really found her calling when she began painting in the medium of oil. Her emotional depictions of native american children have taken on new dimensions in ths medium. The Montana backdrops Noles is so fond of exude more color and light quality while her painstaking attention to detail is more expressive than ever. Her work in oil is done in a realistic "Old Master" style that requires many delicate layers of paint and much patience
She graduated from the Omaha School of Commercial Art at the age of 19, and went to work for Hallmark illustrating greeting cards right after graduation, where she worked for 20 years before venturing into the fine art market. She has also created collectible plates for the Bradford Exchange and the Hamilton Group and has done illustrations and designs for Roth International.
Living in Polson, Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Karen Noles uses real native american children as models for her art, and borrows animals from a nearby wildlife refuge to model for her paintings. She likes to pay close attention to details and is meticulous in portraying historical accuracy in her period pieces.
