Pithouses are semisubterranean dwellings

Pithouses were used by most Plateau, some far north, as well as some California tribes.

Pithouses are semisubterranean dwellings used by most
Plateau, some far north, as well as some California tribes. Semisubterranean
means built partially underground. To build a pithouse wooden beams
were placed over a shallow pit or hole dug into the earth. The frame
was then covered with reeds, mats, skins or earth.
