February Pow Wows in the United States


Pow wows are gatherings where people can socialize, dance, sing, drum, and honor their ancestors. Most pow wows are open to the public and anyone can join in the festivities.

If you are interested in attending a pow wow, you might be wondering when and where to find one. Fortunately, there are many pow wows happening across North America throughout the year. In this section, we will focus on some of the pow wows that take place in February, which is also known as National American Indian Heritage Month.

Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirit Powwow in San Francisco, California: This event celebrates the diversity and inclusion of the two-spirit community, which refers to Native Americans who identify with both male and female genders or have a third gender role. The pow wow features traditional dances, drumming, vendors, and a special honoring ceremony for two-spirit elders. It usually takes place the first Saturday in February.

Seminole Tribal Fair and Pow Wow in Hollywood, Florida: This event marks the 50th anniversary of the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 2023 and showcases their rich history and culture. The pow wow includes competitions for dancers and singers, exhibitions of alligator wrestling and snake handling, arts and crafts demonstrations, and a parade of floats. This pow wow is usually held the second weekend in February.

San Manuel Pow Wow in San Bernardino, California: This is one of the largest pow wows in North America that takes place on the second weekend in February at the California State University, San Bernardino. The pow wow will showcase the best of Native American culture and traditions, with over $250,000 in prizes for various dance and drum competitions. There will also be cultural demonstrations, bird singing, peon games, and more.

Hearts of Our People Pow Wow in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: This is a two-day event that will take place the second weekend in February at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Union Ballroom. The pow wow will honor the Native American women who have contributed to the survival and strength of their communities and cultures. The pow wow will feature grand entries, intertribal dancing, exhibition dancing, specials contests for women’s categories, vendors, food, and more.
