Chaco's main draw is Pueblo Bonito, one of the most extensively excavated and studied sites in North America. Center of the Chacoan world and occupied from the mid-800s to 1200s, it was a four-story masonry "great house" with more than 600 rooms and 40 kivas.

Travel Reviews: Top 10 drives in Indian Country Posted on Thursday, June 02 @ 00:14:44 CDT (7349 reads)
|

AUTHOR: Richard Nilsen, The Arizona Republic
If you're like most people, chances are good that what you see in your mind
when you picture the West are the mesas and canyons of Arizona's Indian
Country.
On the roads of the Hopi and Navajo reservations in the northeastern corner
of the state, you discover the rosy sandstone, mint-green sagebrush and the
turquoise skies of American dreams.
But the reservations are more than the scenery, however spectacular.

AUTHOR: James Hagengruber, Gazette Staff Writer
"Today, I who have been called Chief of Chiefs, among red men, present to all the children of our Great White Father this land where the snows of many winters have fallen on my tepee. This park is not to be a memorial to me, but to the Crow Nation. It is given as a token of my friendship for all people, both red and white."
-- Chief Plenty Coups during an Aug. 8, 1928, celebration marking his desire to set aside his land south of Billings as a park.
PRYOR -- If Chief Plenty Coups visited his home and farm today, he'd probably beam with pride.
After decades of neglect, the land the last traditional Crow leader set aside as a peace park is coming into its own, historians and tribal members say.

"Down by the river, where the water flows cold and clear, I'll whisper sweet words to you, honey, words you want to hear."
-Hidatsa courting song
KNIFE RIVER INDIAN VILLAGES, N.D. - The renowned Mandan-Hidatsa flute player shared his people's songs and stories as listeners huddled around a glowing fire in the earth-covered lodge.
"A young lady might hear a song similar to this along the river," explained Keith Bear, as he began to play the flute, pausing midway to sing the words from a courtship song before ending the soulful melody with one last breath.
Bear, of the Three Affiliated Tribes, welcomes adventurers to the Knife River villages, a national historic site of the Hidatsa. Nearly 200 years ago, as Lewis and Clark made their landmark expedition to the Pacific Coast, they wintered in the five-village area of the Mandan and Hidatsa people.
