One Thousand White Women
The Journals of May Dodd
by Jim Fergus

Book Excerpt:

In September of 1874, the great Cheyenne "Sweet Medicine Chief" Little Wolf made the long overland journey to Washington, D.C., with a delegation of his tribesmen for the express purpose of making a lasting peace with the whites. Having spent the weeks prior to his trip smoking and softly discussing various peace initiatives with his tribal council of forty-four chiefs, Little Wolf came to the nation's capital with a somewhat novel, though from the Cheyenne worldview, perfectly rational plan that would ensure a safe and prosperous future for his greatly besieged people.

KEYWORDS: essay contest for native american students essay contest for Indians This Day in North American Indian History Phil Konstantin history book on American Indians native american history lesson plans ideas for student activity education north american history US history

Cherokee author Phil Konstantin (author of This Day in North American Indian History ) has announced an essay contest for students who belong to a north american Indian tribe.

Phil says, "There are a couple of reasons for this contest. It is my hope that these essays will help raise the participant's awareness in the subject matter. Sharing the information will help to educate the public, as well. Finally, this is a way for me to help pay back the community who has supported my efforts through my websites, newsletters and book

This is an essay contest for North American Indian students. Anyone who is a member of any tribe between the North Pole and Panama is eligible to enter. When the word "tribe" is used is the rules, it is meant to include the concept of "nation" or "native village," as well.

teddy writes KEYWORDS: Cherokee relocation story cherokee family story cherokee country tsa la gi

For a long time she heard her parents and Grandparents arguing. It was not so much personal, as it had to do with what was happening to the Cherokee people and how there were rumors and such. Talk of the whiteman forcing us from our land, talk of deceit, which Grandpa always said was the way with most white men, with few exceptions. White politicians? Grandpa would get so angry at even the word politicians and told us to never trust anything they said and did. All they wanted was Indian land and to kill every Indian they could.

This arguing was serious. As I listened from the loft, I could hear Grandma nearly pleading with Grandpa to sign the rolls of the Cherokee. He refused. I will not sign anything to prove who I am! He nearly shouted and Grandpa was always so tender with Grandma. “If we sign onto those rolls,” Grandpa said, we are signing our death warrant
