Today the Sinixt, or Lake Indians, as they are also known, live primarily on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington State, where they form part of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, which is recognized by the United States government as an American Indian Tribe. A few Sinixt live in their traditional West Kootenay territory, particularly the Slocan Valley. They are no longer legally recognized by the Canadian government.

AUTHOR: Nicholas Geranios
The situation was desperate for Lt. Col. Edward Steptoe and his men, down to their last few rounds of ammunition after a day of fighting Indian warriors from numerous tribes.
But darkness came, and Steptoe's force managed to escape, ending a battle 150 years ago that eventually led to the brutal subjugation of the tribes in the Inland Northwest.

TNB->Shoshone Indian: Shoshone try to gain ownership of historic Washakie Cemetery Posted on Sunday, January 13 @ 19:20:41 CST (3090 reads)
|

AUTHOR: Kristen Moulton
The patch of ground isn't much to look at. Surrounded by sagebrush and tall, dry grass on a hillside just south of the Idaho state line, there's no water - and the only access is a two-track dirt path. But looks deceive.
The parcel, just shy of 5 acres, is the resting place of more than 200 Northwestern Shoshones, including Sagwitch, the chief who led survivors of the 1863 Bear River Massacre into the Mormon Church.
And now the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone, headquartered in Brigham City nearly 35 miles to the south, is taking steps to gain ownership of the Washakie Cemetery, surrounded on all sides by the band's 180-acre "reservation" near Portage.

TNB->Cherokee Indian: Quarterback Sam Bradford is source of pride for the Cherokee Nation Posted on Saturday, December 01 @ 20:18:24 CST (5951 reads)
|

AUTHOR: Vahe Gregorian
J.R. Cook, executive director of United National Indian Tribal Youth in Oklahoma City, believes Bradford is the first quarterback with American Indian heritage to start for a major college program since Sonny Sixkiller at Washington in 1972.
"Obviously, Oklahoma football is huge all over the state, and in the Cherokee Nation it's the same," Miller said. "The quarterback on an Oklahoma team who's done as well as he has is a rock star in Oklahoma, and now we feel like he's our rock star."
Sports, of course, aren't always the most meaningful endeavor, Cook said. But he understands their visibility and likes to note an old American Indian saying: "The honor of one is the honor of all."

with gray whales all around, when Wayne Johnson decided he had waited long
enough: It was time to hunt whales again.
Within minutes Saturday, Johnson and four other Makah tribal members were
on the downtown dock at Neah Bay, boarding two motorized boats. By the end
of the day, the men were in handcuffs and a whale was dead.

TNB->Cherokee Indian: Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is trying to break a treaty signed in 1866 Posted on Thursday, June 21 @ 15:44:33 CDT (3398 reads)
|

AUTHOR: George Wickliffe
Federally-recognized tribal governments are in a better position with the United States than ever before. And because of that, I am concerned that the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is trying to break a treaty signed in 1866 with the original Cherokees. It is dangerous to try and break a treaty. It opens doors for Congress to abolish their government-to-government relationship with the tribes.

It took 100 years and dozens of visits to Washington, but the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina crossed their most significant hurdle yet Thursday in their ongoing quest for full federal legitimacy.
After hours of debate that pitted North Carolina congressmen and Indian tribes against one another, the U.S. House voted overwhelmingly to give the Lumbee a status that could bring hundreds of millions of tax dollars in housing, education and health benefits.
