ASPEN, Colo. - May 16 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- "Why, then, make so great ado about the Roman and the Greek, and neglect the Indian?," wrote Henry David Thoreau in his Journal in 1857. A missing piece of what shaped this icon and American consciousness will be revealed at a weekend seminar in Aspen, Colorado June 3-5, 2005, entitled "Thoreau and the Evolution of the American Mind: The Next Step."

Thoreau scholar, Bradley P. Dean, Ph.D., will introduce highlights of Henry's 12 "Indian Notebooks," which he said, "includes just under 4,000 manuscript pages, probably to write a book he did not live to publish." They reveal how Thoreau was intrigued by American Indians since his boyhood, and how this involvement influenced his philosophy, according to Native Voices Foundation (NVF).

At perhaps no other time in recent history has the Gathering of Eagles carried such significance. The annual get-together, held near Custer, strives to bring understanding among people, particularly in the area of spirituality.

"The focus is on the unity of all of us," Mary Ellen Uptain, one of the organizers of the event, said.

This year's Gathering of Eagles begins Thursday, June 27, and runs through Sunday, June 30, at Canyon Calm, 24 miles southwest of Custer. It is free and open to the public.

ROSEBUD -- The Lakota Studies staff at Sinte Gleska University has been reviving a lost art as they host a Tipi Making Project on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.

A news release from Sinte Gleska said that traditionally, the art of tipi making was practiced by a Lakota "Women's Guild" made up of the most skilled craftswomen in Lakota society. The art was lost when the federal government confined tribal nations to reservations, limiting their access to buffalo hides and trees for tipi poles.

June 16-28, the Lakota Studies Department is offering a course in tipi making, bringing back old ceremonies associated with the art.

Fight racism by studying hard and speaking up, former vice-presidential candidate Winona LaDuke told about 600 local American Indian students attending a conference in Billings on Wednesday.

“There is no social-change fairy,” said LaDuke, an Ojibwa from Minnesota. “There is only change made by the hands of individuals.”
