The unicorn is a mythical beast usually depicted with the body of a horse, but with a single – usually spiral – horn growing out of its forehead (hence its name from Latin unus 'one' and cornus 'horn'). The unicorn's blood and horn supposedly have mystical healing properties.
Though the modern popular image of the unicorn is sometimes that of a horse differing only in the horn, the traditional unicorn has a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hooves, which distinguish him from a horse.
It is a common miconception that unicorns cannot fly, however it has been said that unicorns are able to achieve flight through their magical properties, that apparently stem from the animals horn. This is the reason they are sometimes confused with the similar animal Pegasus, which is usually depicted with wings.
It has been said that pegasus is supposedly stemmed from horses, while unicorns have been created from goats. Nevertheless, today's depictions of unicorns are almost always modeled on the horse with a horn.
