The woodland Indians called this type of weapon a "Tomahawk.". Tomahawk is a word derived from the Algonquian language. It was only after European traders introduced metal hatchets that the word "Tomahawk" became linked with an axe like weapon.
This particular tomahawk head is made from a naturally shaped stone from a river bed. It is bound onto a deerskin wrapped chokecherry handle with rawhide.
A medicine bundle is attached for supernatural abilities in battle, turkey feathers which are dyed to simulate Eagle feathers (Eagle feathers are earned by feats of bravery), a small bone from a Fox to enhance the cunning of its owner and a tuft of horse hair from his favorite swift pony to mke his blows lightening fast.
The stone head is approximately 3 to 4" in length and approximately 1 1/2" thick. Stone shapes will vary. The overall length is approximately 16-18 inches. The deerskin wrapped handle is decorated with brass studs.
This tomahawk will make a great conversation piece for any artifact replica collection.
