If your ENTIRE order will fit in a poster tube, or 9x11 envelope, enter ARTPRINTS in the Coupon box to save $3.00 on postage.

This item can be shipped internationally, but additional postage may apply.

Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931), traveled west from Iowa to Montana Territory at age 25 to become post-photographer at Fort Keogh just after Custer's demise at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Although the post photographer position was an unpaid one, it did provide a dirt-floor log studio and an opportunity to make and sell photographs. In his spare time, he hunted buffalo for the meat and the money the hides would bring.

Laton Huffman later moved to Miles City, Montana Territory, in December 1879, and remained in Montana for the next 50 years, photographing indian warriors, cowboys, buffalo and frontier life and characters.

His pictures are a magnificent pictorial history of the era of the last of the Indian wars, the extermination of the great buffalo herds, the rough and ready life of the frontier towns, the cattlemen and the coming of the railroad.

The photographs he took of buffalo hunting between 1880 and 1883 are among the few in existence and capture the last years of the once vast herds.

By far, Huffman's most extensive body of work relates to the cattle industry, which is not surprising since he co-owned the H Lazy L Ranch near Lame Deer, the first ranch in the Rosebud Valley.

L.A. Huffman was elected to the school board in 1885, later to the Custer County Board of Commissioners and in 1893 to the Montana House of Representatives.
