The kokopelli, mahu or humpback flute player, as he is also called, is found carved on stones from South America to Canada. Koko means wood; pilau means hump. His hump carried seeds and rainbows, according to one legend. In his flute he carried music of warmth and love. In the old rock paintings, he was pictured with a very large penis, which was a symbol of fertility and abundance. Some legends say Kokopelli came from the stars. One legend says he traveled from village to village, staying only a few days in each village.

As he approached a village, he would play his beautiful flute music, and the virgin maidens of the village would go out to meet him, bringing him a dipper full of cool, sweet water. He would choose one special girl to spend the night with, and impregnate her. The resulting children were said to have supernatural powers.

Other legends say he played his flute to bring rain, and he taught the villagers how to plant and grow abundant crops. So this is another symbol of his fertility.
