The Crow got their name because when they first met the white soldiers, they were butchering buffalo. When the white men asked what they called themselves, they said they were the Big Bird People, referring to their sacred eagle. But, there were a lot of crows around at the time cleaning up the offal from the butchering, so the soldiers erroneously thought that was the big bird they were referring to, and the translation stuck.
