Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe was probably one of the best known leaders of the Pacific Northwest tribes. He lead his people on an amazing 1400 mile journey over three months in 1877 in one of the last bids for freedom of the native american tribes.

Upon his surrender, he gave a famous speech that is often quoted as containing the excerpt, "The little children are freezing. My people are tired and hungry. From where the Sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

Chief Joseph died in 1904 on the Colville Reservation in Washington State, where he and a few hundred followers were exiled from most of the Nez Perce tribe, and never again saw his beloved Wallowa Valley in Oregon. The doctor who signed his death certificate said he died of a broken heart.

Chief Joseph's grave is in front of what used to be the general store, a few feet off the main highway that runs through Nespelem, Washington.
