The buffalo was the main staple of the American Plains Indians, providing food, tools, shelter, and clothing. In the 1700s, over 60 million buffalo roamed the plains. In a little over a century, the buffalo was hunted to near extinction by American buffalo hunters, who usually only took the hides and tongues, and left the rest of the bison on the Plains to rot. In 1905, less than 1,000 bison remained.

Today, a protected herd founded from the last of the wild pure buffalo, is making a comeback in Yellowstone Park and is managed to maintain a level of about 3500 animals. Many indian tribes and some private ranchers also maintain buffalo herds and have another 250,000 buffalo in their herds.

The sacred white buffalo is extremely rare and was a holy figure in the Sioux Indian tradition. This bust is a fitting tribute to this magnificant animal that once freely roamed the Western plains.
