Most people have no trouble recognizing these redbirds. The cardinal belongs to the finch family of birds. The female crdinal is bright red, while the male has a red head, but is a duller color over the rest of the body. This is the opposite of the sexual coloring patterns of most birds. The female cardinal whistles along with the male, another unusual trait for a femail bird. Whistles are often reminders to listen closely--to pay attention to what is blowing on the winds.
