The man in this painting is wearing an eagle bone whistle. The tibula bone of an eagle wing is used for this sacred whistle. It is attached to a buckskin cord and usually tipped with a white plume feather from the breast of a golden eagle.

They were used in the Sun Dance and some Grass Dances. The sound of the eagle bone whistle can be heard by the Great Spirit (Wakan Takan). These whistles are considered very sacred and to blow them for any other purpose would not be respectful.

In the Cherokee language, the color blue represents saddness or defeat. In some other tribes, blue symbolized failure, disappointment, or unsatisfied desire. To say "they shall never become blue" expressed the belief that they would never fail in anything they undertook.

In love charms, the lover figuratively covered himself with red and prayed that his rival would become entirely blue and walk in a blue path. "He is entirely blue, " approximates the meaning of the common English phrase, "He feels blue. "The blue spirits lived in the North.
