Deer establish a territory and will not leave it. They are known to starve or drown rather than leave their domain.
Only male deer grow antlers. They shed them annually and then regrow them the next year. Generally the antlers get larger and have more prongs each year for the first seven years of a deer's life. After that the size of a buck deer's antlers stay about the same. How large a rack of antlers gets depends on how much calcium is available in the deer's diet.
Deers have hollow strands of hair that help to keep it insulated from extremes of temperature and prevent it from drowning in deep water.
Depending on the species, male deer are called stags, harts, bucks or bulls. The deer pictured here is a white-tailed deer, so called because the underside of the tail is white. When alarmed, white-tailed deer raise their tail like a flag to warn other members of their herd of impending danger. Male white-tailed deer are called bucks.
