Shop for Fine Mata Ortiz Pottery |
|
Based on designs found in the nearby Aztec ruins of Paquime, these One-of-a-Kind pieces are all hand crafted using the traditional "pinch-and-coil" method of pottery making that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Popularized by the famous potter, Juan Quezada, there are now more than 200 families in the village of Mata Ortiz that create a range of the fine Mata Ortiz pottery that is highly prized by collectors around the world.
The distinguishing features of Mata Ortiz pottery are the bottom of the pot, the thin walls and their unique designs. First, the bottoms are spherical and usually will come with a woven basket ring so the pot can be placed on a flat surface.
Second, the thinness of the walls set them apart from the pottery of the Southwest. And third, the designs are different than any other type of pottery. Once you become familiar with the design work of the Mata Ortiz potters, you will appreciate the fact that they are in a class of their own.
One of the reasons Mata Ortiz pottery is so popular is the remarkably high quality of the finished work. The attention to detail shows in the potter’s commitment and pride he places in this pottery.
