AUTHOR: Michael Krauss
Speaking of the sacredness of things, I honestly believe, as a linguist who is supposed to view languages as objects of scientific study, that somehow or other they elude us, because every language has its own divine spark of life.
Philosophers have said that languages are, in fact, forms of life. I believe that. As I have said before, a hundred linguists working for a hundred years could not get to the bottom of a single language. I never heard any linguist disagree with that statement.
Yes -- and a hundred Navajo linguists working a hundred years on Navajo still, I am sure you would all admit, would not get to the bottom of Navajo. It certainly would help, though, if there were a hundred Navajo linguists working a hundred years on Navajo. Let us hope that Navajo and other such languages will be around for a hundred years.
Language survival is the central topic that I wish to address here today.

AUTHOR: Adam Bowles, Norwich Bulletin
Although his mother and aunts developed the disease, Kenneth M. Reels, chairman of the Mashantucket Tribal Council, never knew what diabetes was until he was diagnosed with it four years ago.
Reels has since become well educated on the topic, hosting five annual conferences on diabetes at tribe-owned Foxwoods Resort Casino, the world's largest gambling enterprise.
But local and state health experts say ignorance and denial remain a problem among hundreds of local American Indians who suffer from the disease, but don't seek care until they face a serious, sometimes life-threatening complication.

Utah is among 19 states in which the American Indian population exceeds the U.S. proportion of 1.5 percent, and among four Southwestern states in which American Indians make up the majority of the population in certain counties, according to U.S. Census figures released today.
The figures from the 2000 Census also show that the number of Indians is increasing at a faster rate than the overall U.S. population, and the majority of Indians live in the West.

Keywords: Indian population figures indian population statistics 1990 Census + Indians American Indian population figures
Author: Jon Kamman, The Arizona Republic
Phoenix has the highest proportion of American Indians among the top 10 cities in the nation.
But increasing urbanization doesn't necessarily mean Indians are losing touch with their ancestral homelands and cultures, a leading Indian academician said Tuesday.
A Census 2000 summary released today shows that the population of 35,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives within the city limits of Phoenix represents an Indian component of 2.7 percent. No count was available for other areas of the Valley.
