"Today, I who have been called Chief of Chiefs, among red men, present to all the children of our Great White Father this land where the snows of many winters have fallen on my tepee. This park is not to be a memorial to me, but to the Crow Nation. It is given as a token of my friendship for all people, both red and white."
-- Chief Plenty Coups during an Aug. 8, 1928, celebration marking his desire to set aside his land south of Billings as a park.

PRYOR -- If Chief Plenty Coups visited his home and farm today, he'd probably beam with pride.

After decades of neglect, the land the last traditional Crow leader set aside as a peace park is coming into its own, historians and tribal members say.

Over 10,000 tribal members are enrolled in the Crow Tribe and many live on the 2.5 million acres that make up the Crow Indian Reservation. This huge reservation, approximately 60 miles wide and 40 miles long, lies in south central Montana.

The annual Crow Fair, one of the largest pow wows held in the United States, takes place at Crow Agency every August.

Crow Agency is also near the popular tourist site of the Battle of the Big Horn National Monument. Each year they produce an excellent re-enactment of the battle.

In the way of the Crow, storytellers have passed down the traditions and history of the people word by word, from one generation to the next, since the beginnings of the tribe.

Phenocia Bauerle, a senior at Montana State University and an enrolled member of the Crow Tribe, has become a storyteller with a contemporary twist. She has edited a book of Crow stories that will be published next spring by the University of Nebraska Press.

Note: Crow Fair is the self-proclaimed Tipi Capitol of the World, with over 1,000 tipis in the encampment. If you can only attend one pow wow in your lifetime, this is the one I would recommend.

The Crow Reservation was established by the Treaty of 1851. The Tribal government maintain jurisdiction within the boundaries of the reservation including all rights-of-way, waterways, watercourses and streams running through any part of the reservation and to such others lands as may hereafter be added to the reservation under the laws of the United States. The Tribal government operates under a constitution approved on June 24, 1948 by the Tribal membership. Under this constitution the tribve has a general council form of government in which every adult enrolled member is allowed to vote if he is present during the meeting of the General Council. One hundred or more adults constitutes a quorum of the general council. This Council has the authority to represent, act and speak for the Tribe and its members.
