Actor and activist Floyd Red Crow WestermanGwen Westerman Griffin of Mankato, MN announced today that Floyd Red Crow Westerman passed to the spirit world this morning about 5:00 a.m. in Los Angeles, California, at Cedars Sinai Hospital with family at his side after an extended illness. He was 71.

Today is a sad day, not just for the Native American people, but for all people. Red Crow has left behind a legacy that will be around till the end of time itself.

From singing, to acting in movies to being an activist, his life is a story and also an example of what we should be and hope to strive for in life. Through his devotion and dedication for the Native American youth to his global journeys to fight for saving the rain forests, Westerman has left a message for all to see and hear.

Even though Floyd Red Crow Westerman has been best known as an actor and mucisian, his life has been devoted to the benefit of all of mankind.

The qualities of an Elder are not gained easily and the stature requires more than the advancement of years.

Although she would have probably countered the claim, few truly deserved the recognition of Elder more than Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota activist Fern Eastman Mathias who passed away on March 31 after a yearlong fight against ill health.

For over 60 years she selflessly dedicated her life to Native rights.

LA JOLLA INDIAN RESERVATION ---- Henry Rodriguez, one of North County's most widely respected tribal elders, died Thursday morning in a traffic accident. He was one of only about 18 people who could speak the ancient Luiseno language.

"It is a great loss," said his daughter, Donna Buchimora. "We know what he's meant to the community."

Rodriguez, 82, was driving his pickup north on Sengme Oaks Road at 9:10 a.m. Thursday. He stopped at the stop sign at Highway 76, then drove onto Highway 76 in front of an oncoming pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

That truck slammed into the driver's side door of Rodriguez's truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP is investigating the accident.
