Pithouses are semisubterranean dwellings used by most
Plateau, some far north, as well as some California tribes. Semisubterranean
means built partially underground. To build a pithouse wooden beams
were placed over a shallow pit or hole dug into the earth. The frame
was then covered with reeds, mats, skins or earth.
